Falafel Stuffed with Feta Cheese on a Bed of Summer Salad

250g chickpeas (soaked over previous night)
2 cloves of garlic
100g feta cheese
10g mixed herbs
1/2 tsp cumin powder
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 pear
1 cooked beetroot
Salad leaves
Vegetable oil for deep frying

The Falafel:

In a food processor: mix chickpeas, garlic,chopped herbs, cumin,baking powder, salt & pepper to make falafel mix.
Whisk until a smooth paste. Taste .
Cut feta cheese to 1 cm square cubes.
Take a handful of falafel mix. Flatten it on the palm of your hand. Put the feta cheese in middle and cover with more falafel mix.
Roll into ball and place in hot oil. (around 160 degrees).
Deep fry until golden brown on the outside. Place on paper towel to rid of excess fat.

For the salad :

Peel the pear. Cut lengthwise, remove seeds.
Cut the beetroot lengthwise.
Plate salad leaves, pears and beetroot.
Drizzle over olive oil, season.

Zion I (pronounced “Zion Eye”) are a hip hop duo from Oakland, California. The duo consists of producer (& DJ), AmpLive, and MC Zumbi. The group is known to its followers for Amp’s futuristic production techniques, using a mix of live instrumentation and samples, and Zumbi’s positive and socially conscious lyrics. Zion I debuted in 1997 with the locally distributed cassette-only EP Enter the Woods. Their first single on Indie label Ground Control Records (“Inner Light”) paved the way for an album deal and in 2000, they released the critically acclaimed Mind Over Matter. In total, they have released six studio albums, 2000’s Mind Over Matter, 2003’s Deep Water Slang V2.0, 2005’s True & Livin’, 2006’s Break a Dawn (a Japan exclusive), also in 2006 a collaborative album with The Grouch, Heroes in the City of Dope, and 2009’s The Take Over.

To friends, colleagues and those that should know, As of today (September 8, 2009) I am no longer the Executive Editor of Music at BET.com. Upon entering the position at BET I said that I needed one year to see what really went on inside the belly of the beast. I needed 365 days to sleep with the enemy and infiltrate the system. One year to see if they REALLY wanted change at BET.

As someone who has been critical of BET for many years, it surprised many that I would leave my post at HipHopDX last year to take a position at BET. But it was an opportunity I absolutely had to take. I could no longer be critical of this company without accepting the opportunity to change it when given. Although I was hired to bring about change, I was systematically shut down. I wasn’t hired to make noise, I was hired to be silenced. The truth of the matter is that everything that you thought was wrong with BET is true.

Over the past year I’ve seen a lot to reinforce my position that BET is too far gone in the negative to turn into a positive. We have all always thought the worst, but to actually see it in action is another thing in its entirety. The unprofessionalism, the tom foolery, the favors, the misappropriation of resources, the bad ideas that reinforce negative stereotypes, the emasculation of men, the meetings that break down in full fledged cursing battles, the unpaid overtime, the tears from employees scared for their underpaid and overworked positions and ultimately the unwillingness to change are all harsh realities that I’ve witnessed firsthand.

That is not to say that there aren’t some good people who have sat in the offices of BET. Unfortunately, the good people are not in positions of power to instill any change. Instead, they work their fingers to the bone just to keep their jobs in this harsh economic climate. The other good people ran out of the door as soon as an another employment opportunity presented itself. To say BET was a revolving door would be an understatement. I came in with a plan to provide balance and to deliver good music to the masses and help make BET relevant again - at least in the dot com world. Those attempts were shut down by out of touch executives who run a dot com but could barely turn on a computer. By those who judge their metrics by page views over absolute unique visitors (that‘s ad sales talk). By those who simply don’t understand the internet.

They brought me in because of my track record but never once took a look at my body of work. If they did, they would have known that I was the pen behind editorials such as “BET’s Coon Picnic” or were aware of the many times I have been critical of their award shows and programming. All they knew is that I played a major role in making a once unknown website into a online media outlet that surpassed theirs and they wanted a piece of the action. Too bad they never researched who I really was.

During my tenure I worked long hours and sometimes succeeded at bringing in decent content to try to reflect the change I wanted to achieve. But it wasn’t without opposition. While some interviews and content initiatives were able to make it through, many others were either shut down or met with ridicule. I offered ideas to incorporate the blog world and to spotlight new talent before MTV did. Those ideas were met with comments such as “This isn’t HipHopDX” or “You don’t know what you are talking about.”

BET is not about the quality of your work. Rather, BET is about the relationships you have with powerful people within the company. BET is not about challenging. Instead, BET is about accepting and saying “yes.” If you have known or followed me over the years, you would know that these are things that simply are not in my character and ultimately resulted in my removal. For the artists and labels that I have worked with for years, I tried. I did whatever I could to achieve that balance many of us wanted to see happen.

To the writers who wanted to writer for BET, I made an attempt but was never given a budget to work with. Upon my arrival, I was told I would be given a staff. Not true. I had a staff of one to carry out daily operations on a website. I fought tooth and nail to accomplish the minimum (an embeddable player and a site people could navigate) and was constantly brushed off. It was a position that was set up for failure. But I endured as long as I could.

Alas, I have been removed from my position after infiltrating the system and the timing was perfect. I wasn’t let go because the site’s numbers were down. Not because I didn’t work hard. Simply because of a personality clash with an individual whose proverbial ass I didn’t kiss enough. Again, not about the work you do but about the relationships you keep and the sides you take.

I’d like to thank BET for covering the cost of my relocation to bring me to the great city of New York/New Jersey. I’d also like to thank them for putting me in close quarters with people who think like me and will hopefully work with in the near future. I’d also like to thank them for providing me enough controversial content that I observed firsthand and will make for many tales to be told. I said it and I meant in: One year to either make changes or move on. I left HipHopDX on September 16th 2008. Today is September 8, 2009. Eight days short of a year. Most thought I wouldn’t even last that long. But in that year I’ve had my greatest fears about Black Entertainment Television affirmed. There is so much wrong with BET that I’d rather not break it down in a single email. It is pretty good fodder for a book don’t you think? As of today, Andreas Hale is a free agent.

At some experimental programs in inner-city and rural schools, educators are finding evidence that advanced technology has the potential to put students of different backgrounds on a more equal footing. In these programs, teachers report that many students who use computer networks have shown a new enthusiasm for learning and have improved their test scores.

The Ralph Bunche elementary school in Harlem, education experts say, offers a glimpse of the social potential of computer networks. The school at 123d Street and Amsterdam Avenue is surrounded by the problems of inner-city life. The students wrote in a recent issue of their newspaper not only about a dinosaur project and a spelling bee, but also about guns, gangs and crack.

Yet inside the school, students like DeVernie Winston, a 12-year-old sixth grader, are part of a remarkable example of affirmative action for the information age. He sits at one of the dozens of personal computers that are linked to the Internet web of global networks. Of Koala Bears and Kangaroos

By guiding his computer mouse and tapping keyboard commands, DeVernie retrieves on his screen hurricane weather maps and a textbook history of Azerbaijan for school assignments. For fun, he trades electronic messages with a researcher in Australia, whose descriptions of koala bears and kangaroos have clearly delighted the New York sixth grader.

“You send a message, and people respond,” DeVernie said, “telling you things you never knew.”

The high-tech setting in Harlem is largely the work of a dedicated group of teachers. Still, the school has benefited from some Federal and corporate grants. Among other donations, the school received a grant from Apple Computer last year for $100,000 worth of computers. And the National Science Foundation is contributing $15,000 a year for a high-speed data line that sends and receives electronic information four times faster than the fastest modems.

“Compared with most schools, our modest data line is the information superhighway,” said Paul Reese, a 53-year-old teacher who heads the school’s computer program. Prizes of a ‘Grant Hustler’

Mr. Reese, a self-taught computer expert and confessed “grant hustler,” leads a group of nine teachers in the Bunche computer “mini-school.” The 250 students in the mini-school are selected from volunteers for the program as a representative cross section of the Bunche school’s 650 students, including children with learning disabilities. Mini-school students have scored notably better on standardized math tests and slightly better on reading tests than comparable students in conventional classes.

But, Mr. Reese stressed, the computer-assisted teaching program is not shaped to achieve test-score results and does not emphasize drill work. At Ralph Bunche, teachers and students have tailored their software to help guide students through the on-line labyrinth of the Internet, which can be so bewildering that it has been described as a library without a card catalogue. On a recent afternoon, students were seated at machines in Room 409, researching homework, writing reports and sending messages to electronic “pen pals” worldwide. The resource materials on the Internet include the C.I.A. World Fact Book. Recently, for an assignment on whales, a fifth grader was sent digitally coded whales sounds, which he included in his multimedia report.

Georgina Williams, an 11-year-old, and a few friends clustered around a machine equipped with a small camera for video conferencing were enthusiastically trading electronic messages and looking at researchers at Cornell University.

“Look at the excitement with the connection to other people,” Mr. Reese said. “And with the network kids can educate themselves, following their own interests.” he said. “This technology is simply a tool, but it can be a very powerful tool. My feeling is that it’s going to be increasingly important, and it should be available to everyone, especially kids like ours.”

Doctors Create New Nose For Woman By Growing It On Her Arm (VIDEO)

Fox News has an uplifting report about how doctors were able to create a new nose for a woman from Guyana by first growing it on her arm. The young woman was involved in a drive-by shooting in her native country, and through the help of some benevolent doctors and the “Face to Face” program she was able to come to the U.S. for this operation. The surgery was a success and will go a long way towards returning normalcy to her life.
